Our science

Pro-bacterial, not antibacterial.

Your mouth is home to around 700 species of bacteria, and many of them are on
your side. Gutology is building the future of oral microbiome friendly oral care. We
formulate to leave that community intact, test it independently, and publish what we find,
including what we don't know yet.

The idea

A mouth isn't something to sterilise.

Your oral microbiome isn't just along for the ride. It's one of the busiest communities in your body, and it does real work every day. The friendly bacteria hold the space so troublemakers struggle to settle, keep acid in check, and help your body make use of the food you eat. Dental science now talks about controlling plaque without killing everything. That's the idea we build on: clean your teeth, and leave the community that does this work intact.

Cleans your teeth. Oral Microbiome Friendly

Our Mineral and Kids toothpastes clean with hydroxyapatite, the main mineral in tooth enamel. Both are independently certified oral microbiome friendly.

  • 13 Mouth bacteria tested against From friendly residents to known troublemakers, by an independent lab for
  • 9/9 Everyday mouth bacteria left undisturbed In lab tests, by both our Mineral and Kids toothpastes.
  • Real Human mouth samples, not just lab cultures Swabs from healthy volunteers, so we could see the whole community.

Why it matters

Tested on real human mouth samples, not just lab cultures.

Most lab tests check one bacterium at a time, in a dish. That shows how a single species reacts, but your mouth doesn't work like that. Hundreds of species live together, and they depend on each other. So the lab also mixed our toothpastes with swabs taken from the mouths of healthy volunteers. In lab tests, the whole community held steady.

Meet the residents

Some of the friendly bacteria it left undisturbed

Tested against 13 bacteria, from friendly residents to known troublemakers.

  • Streptococcus salivarius Named after saliva. One of the first bacteria to settle in a baby's mouth, within days of birth. Left undisturbed
  • Streptococcus mitis A "pioneer" bacterium. Among the first back on your teeth within hours of brushing, it shapes who joins next. Left undisturbed
  • Streptococcus sanguinis Another pioneer settler on teeth, and part of the first layer every healthy mouth builds. Left undisturbed
  • Rothia mucilaginosa Lives on your tongue and turns nitrate from vegetables like spinach and beetroot into nitrite. Left undisturbed
  • Lactobacillus gasseri Lives in your mouth and your gut, one of the bacteria the two have in common. Left undisturbed

1.5 litres

That's up to how much saliva you swallow every day, and it carries your mouth bacteria with it. Your mouth is the front door to your gut, which is why we think what you brush with matters.

Certified oral microbiome friendly by KIND TO BIOME®. Everyday bacteria comparison based on QACS reports for our first Mineral formula (lot V8) and current formulas. Testing by QACS Laboratories on Mineral Toothpaste batch 25203, certificate 2026-26 49 05417, and Kids Toothpaste batch 25246, certificate 2026-26 49 03604. Lab and ex vivo testing, 10 minutes at 37 °C. Shows the toothpastes don't disturb the oral microbiome. It isn't proof of an active health benefit.

Our signature ingredient

Truebiotic®

A paraprobiotic complex: inactivated bacterial components, a type of postbiotic. It's designed to work with your mouth's ecosystem, not to sterilise it.

Non-live by design

Nothing to keep alive in the tube. Shelf-stable, no refrigeration.

Works with your mouth's ecosystem

It isn't designed to kill bacteria. It's part of the base our toothpastes are built on, certified oral microbiome friendly.

In every formula

Mineral and Kids toothpaste.

Ingredient research is ongoing. We make no health claims about the finished product.

Natural hydroxyapatite

The mineral your enamel is made of, built to put it back.

Your enamel loses minerals every time acid hits it, after meals, drinks and snacks.

Our toothpastes use a non-nano, functionalised form of hydroxyapatite: the main mineral in enamel, combined with calcium carbonate in a porous particle. In lab tests, it helped restore minerals to softened enamel and made it harder.

Ingredient data from supplier lab studies on enamel samples. Results describe the ingredient, not a clinical trial of the finished toothpaste.

Up to 65%

harder enamel

In lab tests on softened enamel after 6 days, with our mineral at 5% in a fluoride-free formula. (Mineral Toothpaste only, see notes)

Independent study · In progress

Our latest remineralisation study is under way.

An accredited independent lab is running a 14-day study on human enamel, measuring how well our Mineral and Kids toothpastes restore minerals and hardness to softened enamel. It follows a published protocol (Amaechi et al., 2025). We'll publish the results, whatever they show.

Science questions

  • What does "microbiome friendly" mean?

Independent lab tests show the toothpaste doesn't disrupt the normal community of bacteria in the mouth. Our base is certified Kind to Biome® at 9.5 out of 10.

  • Is your hydroxyapatite nano?

    No. We use non-nano hydroxyapatite.

  • Is Truebiotic® a probiotic?

No. It's a paraprobiotic complex: inactivated bacterial components, a type of postbiotic.

  • Does it kill bacteria like mouthwash?

No. It's designed to support balance in your mouth, not to sterilise it.
