The digestive journey: from bite to absorption
Digestion is often thought of as "the stomach's job," but it's actually a coordinated relay involving several organs, each with a specific role.
- Mouth - Digestion starts before you've even swallowed. Chewing physically breaks food into smaller pieces, while an enzyme in saliva called amylase starts breaking down starches straight away.
- Stomach - Once swallowed, food meets a highly acidic environment (strong enough to dissolve metal, in fact) along with enzymes that begin breaking down proteins. This churns everything into a thick liquid called chyme, ready for the next stage.
- Small intestine - This is where most of the real digestive work happens. The pancreas releases a cocktail of enzymes such as proteases for protein, lipase for fat, amylase for carbohydrate into the small intestine. These help break down food into molecules small enough to pass through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream. This is also where the vast majority of vitamins and minerals are absorbed.
- Large intestine (colon) - Whatever hasn't been digested and absorbed reaches the colon, home to an enormous and diverse community of bacteria, your gut microbiome. These bacteria ferment remaining fiber, produce certain vitamins (including some B vitamins and vitamin K), regulate water absorption, and play a significant role in immune function and even mood regulation via the gut-brain connection (1,2).
For this entire system to run smoothly, three things need to be in good working order: the balance of bacteria in the gut, the availability of digestive enzymes, and the overall condition of the gut lining and environment. When any one of these is disrupted, it tends to show up as a recognisable pattern of symptoms.
Common digestive symptoms
It's worth saying upfront: digestive symptoms are hugely common, usually not a cause for alarm, and can have many different explanations. That said, certain patterns tend to point toward certain underlying causes, which is a useful context for understanding your own body.
- Bloating and a feeling of fullness - That tight, heavy feeling after eating (particularly after carbohydrate-heavy or rich meals) is one of the most common digestive complaints. It can be linked to how efficiently food is being broken down before it reaches the large intestine. If larger, undigested particles arrive in the colon, gut bacteria ferment them, producing gas as a byproduct.
- Digestive upset after travelling - Many people notice their digestion becomes unpredictable while travelling or shortly after returning home. This is often because the gut encounters unfamiliar bacteria, different water, or unfamiliar food, which can temporarily disrupt the balance of the resident gut microbiome.
- Changes in digestion after antibiotics - Antibiotics are designed to eliminate harmful bacteria, but they're not selective. They typically reduce populations of beneficial bacteria too. - Sensitivity to certain foods - Struggling with dairy, very fatty meals, or foods high in fibre can sometimes indicate that the body's current enzyme production is not quite keeping up with some food products. This isn't necessarily a fixed state, enzyme production can be influenced by age, stress levels, and overall diet.
- General irregularity or sluggish digestion - Changes in regularity are often tied to the balance and diversity of bacteria in the large intestine. Moreover; hydration, fibre intake, and physical activity, all can influence how efficiently the colon does its job (4,5).
